Iconic Royal Deeside Autumn Walks on Your Doorstep

Our location serves as the perfect gateway to the most famous walking routes in the Cairngorms National Park:

  • Glen Tanar Estate (10 mins away 🚗): Home to ancient Caledonian pines that turn a stunning copper in October. The riverside paths along the Water of Tanar are ideal for dogs and photographers alike.

  • Glen Muick & Loch Muick: A short, scenic drive takes you to this Royal favourite. The 12.5km circuit of the loch is a “must-do,” offering glimpses of the Glas-allt Shiel (Queen Victoria’s lodge) and the dramatic peaks of the munro Lochnagar.

  • The Deeside Way: Join the trail at nearby Aboyne or Ballater for a crisp walk along the River Dee. This former railway line offers flat, easy-access paths with breathtaking views of the river in its autumn flow.

  • Muir of Dinnet: Visit the famous Burn o’ Vat and Loch Kinord to see the birch trees in full golden glory.

Adventure Around Every Corner: Geocaching in Royal Deeside

For those who like their autumn walks with a side of adventure, the area surrounding Cairngorm Lodges is a treasure hunter’s paradise. Geocaching—the world’s largest outdoor GPS treasure hunt—is incredibly popular across the Howe of Cromar, with dozens of “caches” hidden along the Deeside Way, within the ancient forests of Glen Tanar, and around the historic Tomnaverie Stone Circle near Tarland. It’s a brilliant, dog-friendly way to keep the whole family engaged while discovering the “hidden gems” of the Cairngorms that most tourists miss.

Wild Wildlife

Autumn is an exciting time in the Scottish landscape: spotting red squirrels, leaping salmon returning home, the bellow of red deer stags as they battle for the females attention.

VisitScotland’s autumn wildlife e-book details all the specific spots to see deer rut, salmon leap, and red squirrels.

Seasonal produce

As well as the colours of autumn, it also brings in the bounty of local produce.  One of the best places to get your hands on it is at the monthly Aboyne Farmers’ Market.

There you will find more than 25 stallholders who will brave all elements to bring you the very best seasonal fare from their farms, orchards and kitchens. For more information, see: https://www.facebook.com/aboynefarmersmarket/.
